COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

 

• Salary Range: $3,175 – $3,861 per month with the maximum salary placement at $3,501 per month (placement within this range based on experience as documented in application materials).

 

• Fringe Benefits: The District offers a competitive health & benefits package for employees and eligible dependents (benefits are pro-rated for part-time employees).

 

• Leave/Holiday Time: Full-time classified members earn 8 hours of sick leave and start off accruing 6.67 hours of vacation for each month worked (accrual rate increases after third year of employment and rates are pro-rated for part-time employees). Employees are also compensated for holidays recognized by the District (14 holidays/year, pro-rated for part-time employees).

 

Classified employees are required to become a dues paying member of the Service Employee’s International Union SEIU), or pay a service fee.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:

 

Santa Rosa Junior College Shone Farm is seeking a qualified individual with demonstrated mechanical and customer service skills to join an outstanding team of faculty and staff. Under general supervision and in keeping with District-wide sustainability initiatives, operates equipment to perform general field operations; prepares soil for planting; operates irrigation equipment; and perform related work as required. This is a full-time, categorically-funded (Shone Farm funds), 12 months per year Classified position. The tentative work schedule will be Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Appointments are contingent upon funding and Board approval.

 

SCOPE:

The Farm Equipment Operator operates various farm equipment and performs duties relating to equipment maintenance.

 

FARM/DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:

Shone Farm, 365 acres of farmlands, pasture, vineyards, and riparian forest in the Russian River Valley, serves the department as an outdoor learning lab and includes a winery and equine facility. In addition to full-time instructors in each discipline, the department has a large pool of adjunct faculty who are experts in their respective fields. The farm is located about 12 miles from the Santa Rosa Campus, between the towns of Forestville and Windsor, in the heart of the Russian River Valley AVA (American Viticulture Area).

 

Examples of Duties:

 

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Examples of key duties are interpreted as being descriptive and not restrictive in nature. Incumbents routinely perform approximately 80% of the duties below.

• Operates various farm equipment such as tractors, sprayers, hand and power tools.

• Prepares soil for planting.

• Fertilizes and irrigates land.

• Plants and harvests field crops.

• Sprays and prunes vines and fruit trees.

• Performs light maintenance of farm equipment.

• Performs a variety of miscellaneous maintenance at Shone Farm.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

 

ABILITY TO:

Perform physical labor with hand and power equipment; follow and give oral and written instructions; work safely and effectively around the public; maintain cooperative working relationships; demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for, a diverse population.

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Modern farming principles and methods; control of weeds and pests; maintenance and operation of common farm machinery and equipment; planting, irrigating and harvesting; pruning, trimming, and caring for trees; regulations concerning pesticides, herbicides, and general equipment safety.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates/incumbents must meet the minimum qualifications as detailed below, or file for equivalency. Equivalency decisions are made on the basis of a combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities. If requesting consideration on the basis of equivalency, an Equivalency Application is required at the time of interest in a position (equivalency decisions are made by Human Resources, in coordination with the department where the vacancy exists, if needed.)

 

Required Education:

Related training is preferred.

 

Required Experience:

 

• Demonstrated experience in farming with a broad variety of duties and responsibilities.

 

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:

This classification requires the use of a personal or District vehicle while conducting District business. Must possess a valid (Class C) California driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.

 

Preferred:

 

• Qualified Applicator Certificate issued by California Department of Pesticide Regulation.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to perform physical activities, such as, but not limited to, lifting heavy items (up to 50 lbs. unassisted), bending, standing, climbing or walking. Frequently required to work under inclement weather conditions. Must be able to operate a variety of gas powered and/or electrical equipment and sharpen hand tools safely. The selected candidate must pass a pre-employment physical (at the District’s expense).
